Emma M. Glover portrays the life and lessons of Kathryn Johnstone in Kitsy’s Mischief and Horses. Kitsy and her two brothers, Jimmy and Bobby, spend five years of their childhood on several different foster farms as their parents try to get back on their feet after the Great Depression of the 1930s and '40s. Some foster parents are distant and mean, some are neutral, and others are a breath of fresh, life-giving air to the children’s hungry souls. No matter the home situation, Kitsy manages to come through with the help of several different horses that she confides in and loves. The ending is very happy. A great book for ten to twelve-year-old girls, and anyone older than that.
The cover of Kitsy’s Mischief and Horses grabbed me right away. I really appreciated KC Snider’s beautiful drawings at the beginning of each chapter. And Emma Glover does a great job pulling the reader along for a ride through the life of Kathryn “Kitsy” Johnstone. Although the book is geared toward Fourth to Sixth graders, it is intriguing enough to keep an adult interested. Kitsy’s Mischief and Horses was hard for me to put down and I couldn’t wait to get back to it. I enjoyed the writing style. It was very personal, even though it was written by a different woman. I wished that I could hear more about Kitsy’s life. That is my only complaint: the story ended too abruptly. What happened to Kitsy afterwards? You know a story is good when you wish it would never end. And Kitsy’s Mischief and Horses is one of those books. Very delightfully written! A fun and awesome read.
