Scene 1
[Nelly measuring Herod for a royal robe]
Herod: What exactly did those three wise guys mean by asking such a crazy question?
Nelly: What was the question again, Sire?
Herod: [mocking] What do you mean, ‘What was the question again, Sire?’ You heard what they said. ‘They asked where is He who is born King of the Jews?’
Nelly: Wasn’t there more to it, Sire?
Herod: Yes, unfortunately so. They said they had seen His star in the East and had come to worship Him.’
Nelly: Oh Sire, that tiny Baby could be big trouble in Bethlehem.
Herod: You’re right. This could be a huge problem. I am the king of this kingdom, and I don’t need any little newborn wanna-be-King booting me off my throne.
Nelly: But Sire, I am completely confused newborns do not wear boots. They wear booties. [hold up booties]
Herod: Ugh. [sighs] You tailors!
Nelly: Is there anything I can do to help, Sire? Should I make a royal outfit for the newborn Baby?
Herod: That’s it. Brilliant. I will make a decree to all the weavers and tailors in my kingdom to make a royal outfit and find the little Upstart. That’s how I will get my hands on Him.
[Herod finds a scroll, writes on it, and then moves to balcony and recites his decree.]
Herod: Hear ye. Hear ye. I, Herod the King, decree and declare to every tailor and weaver in our fair kingdom that whoever creates the most regal outfit for the newborn King and then brings Him to me will receive a handsome reward.
Song #1 Hear Ye Hear Ye
[Have two or three little ones on stage right, blowing horns on the song’s introduction]
Chorus
Hear ye, hear ye by royal decree
You must go and find this newborn King
He might be sleeping in a palace fair
Or humming lullabies in a rocking chair
Verse
Tailors, get your scissors
Weavers, find your loom
This Baby needs an outfit
And He needs it soon
Chorus
Hear ye, hear ye by royal decree
You must go and find this newborn King
He might be sleeping in a palace fair
Or humming lullabies in a rocking chair
Bridge [Herod solo]
Bring the little One straight to me
I have special plans for His Majesty
Chorus
Hear ye hear ye by royal decree
You must go and find this newborn King
He might be sleeping in a palace fair
Or humming lullabies in a rocking chair
