Camille’s Journey
Scene One

Narrator: A long time ago in a desert where the sun is blazing hot and the scorching sand will burn your feet, lived a servant named Kazool. He tended to his master’s camels. One night while walking in the desert he heard a strange noise.

[Stage Left: Servant Kazool spots orphaned camel Camille on a hill all alone. Stage Right: Three adult camels are watching as Kazool is talking with Camille.]
Song #1—I Won’t Be Afraid
Camille: [voice trembling as she sings]

[Kazool craning his neck, trying to find out where the music is coming from.]
Kazool: What’s that noise I hear? It sounds like singing. Who would be singing out here in the middle of the night in the desert? [pauses and searches] Why, it’s a baby camel! Why are you out here in the dark all alone, little one?

[Camille shrugs shyly.]

Kazool: I haven’t seen another camel for miles. Are you lost?

[Camille nods slightly.]

Kazool: Where are your parents?

[Camille shrugs.]

Kazool: Do you have any parents?

[Camille shakes head slowly.]

Kazool: You don’t have to be afraid of me. I will help you.

[Camille warms up slightly.]

Kazool: Are you an orphan?

[Camille nods.]

Kazool: [hugs Camille’s neck] Now don’t you feel bad about being an orphan. I was an orphan, too, but now I am a servant to the 3 magi—Gasper, Balthasar, and Melchior. My name is Kazool. What’s yours?

Camille: Camille, but my friends call me Cami. I somehow got separated from the herd during a sandstorm.

Kazool: Well, I am the keeper of my masters’ camels.

Camille: You mean I’m not the first camel you’ve ever met?

Kazool: The first camel! Are you kidding me? Around the desert I am known as “The Camel Whisperer!”

Camille: Really! [talking really loud] You mean you can teach me to whisper?
